Dads Matter

Fathers, Parenting, Unplanned Pregnancy Help

Sunday we celebrate Father’s Day, the day of the year when we recognize our fathers and thank them for the impact they have had on our life. Or perhaps we mourn for our father who is no longer with us. Or maybe we grieve for the father that was never really a father to us at all. Or perhaps you are struggling with wondering if you are being the father you are called to be and the father that your kids need. Wherever you are on this Father’s Day, our hope is that the men of today would understand that they matter, and they make more of a difference then they might ever know. Our hope is that you would be encouraged and become equipped to be all that you can be as a father!

How do we know Dads matter? The facts tell us! “Children from fatherless homes are more likely to be poor, become involved in drug and alcohol abuse, drop out of school, and suffer from health and emotional problems.” Research tells us that “More than 20 million children live in a home without the physical presence of a father.  Millions more have dads who are physically present, but emotionally absent.  If it were classified as a disease, fatherlessness would be an epidemic worthy of attention as a national emergency. Fatherlessness has been labeled as one of the biggest issues facing our society today.  The reality is, children with involved fathers do better in every measure of a child’s well-being, than children who are homes where fathers are absent. The National Center for Fathering states “When fathers are involved, their children learn more, perform better in school and exhibit healthier behavior. Even when fathers do not share a home with their children, their active involvement can have a lasting and positive impact.” They call this Father-full-ness! How important it is to be involved with your children, and teach them about they world they are growing up in!

So Dads…You matter! You are more than the man who fixes the leaky sink or mows the lawn. You are more than the provider of your family or the rule enforcer-you are the man who the family looks to for support, encouragement, guidance, and all the fun stuff mom has to say “Be careful!” about. We know there are so many times when you put your needs to the side, and serve your family in ways that might not always get noticed. Just because they might not always be noticed doesn’t mean they don’t matter! For the men out there that are putting themselves second so their family can thrive-don’t ever lose heart because you are more important than you even know. The legacy you leave will last for generations to come.
